Kybella™ was approved by the FDA in April 2015 as a treatment for double chins. It is an artificial version of the deoxycholic acid produced by the body that helps it absorb fats.
How is Kybella™ used?
Kybella™ should be administered only by a doctor. It will be injected into the fatty tissue in the chin.
The patient may undergo several treatment sessions. A single treatment session can take 15 minutes, and most patients may several sessions to get the desired results.
The treatment sessions should be at least a month apart from each other.
The Kybella™ comes in single use vials and should not be mixed or diluted with anything else. The doctor will ease discomfort by using an ice pack or topical numbing medication.
Kybella™ destroys fat cells by destroying their membranes. It is an alternative to liposuction or other surgical procedures performed on double chins.
Can Kybella™ cause side effects?
Kybella™ can cause side effects. The most common include bruising and redness in the treatment site.
While Kybella™ is designed to eliminate the fat cells in the double chin, it can destroy other cells as well. Therefore, an experienced doctor will make certain that it is injected only in fat cells.
Who should not use Kybella™?
Kybella™ is recommended for adults only and should therefore not be administered to anybody under 18 years old. People who are allergic to deoxycholic acid or have an infection in the area to be treated should not use Kybella™.
It is not yet known how Kybella™ might affect a developing baby. Nor is it known if deoxycholic acid can pass into breast milk or if it can harm a nursing infant. Women should, therefore, tell the doctor if they are nursing, pregnant, or plan to become pregnant.
Patients should also tell the doctor if they have a clotting or bleeding disorder like hemophilia, swollen lymph glands in the neck, a thyroid disorder or trouble swallowing.
They should also tell the doctor if they have ever had any surgery on the chin, face or neck or plan to have such surgery in the near future.
Patients should also mention if they take any kind of medicine, including over-the-counter drugs, herbal products or vitamins.
