Am I a Good Candidate for Eyelid Surgery?

eyelid surgery

Good candidates for eyelid surgery, which is also known as blepharoplasty, are those with realistic expectations for the outcome of the procedure. While eyelid surgery can help to enhance your appearance and bolster your confidence, it won’t necessarily have an impact on wrinkles, dark under-eye circles or sagging eyebrows.

Both men and women can receive blepharoplasty surgery. Although the typical patient is 35 years of age or older, younger individuals may also choose to undergo the procedure if they have eyelid issues that are genetic in nature.

There are two kinds of eyelid surgery: Upper blepharoplasty, which addresses the upper eyelids, and lower blepharoplasty, which addresses the lower eyelids.

Candidates for upper eyelid surgery usually have healthy skin and normally positioned eyebrows and eyelid margins with minimal discoloration and no eye-related medical issues. These individuals have unwanted excess skin above the eye and may also have fat deposits surrounding the nasal bridge near the corners of their eyes.

Candidates for lower blepharoplasty have lower eyelids that are well-positioned in relation to their irises, a good lower lid margin, minimal extra skin and no eye-related medical problems.

This procedure is typically meant to reposition or remove pockets of fat underneath the eyes that cause the lower eyelids to appear puffy or droopy.

People who are not ideal candidates for eyelid surgery are those who suffer from chronic dry-eye, hypertension, circulation disorders, thyroid disorders, diabetes or heart disease.

Individuals who have glaucoma are advised to speak with their doctor before considering the surgery to find out if it is safe for them.

If you’re considering blepharoplasty surgery, it’s essential to first determine your goals for the procedure. During your consultation appointment, you will be asked to describe your expectations and aesthetic goals to the surgeon.

They will be able to tell you what degree of improvement you can expect as well as recommend any other procedures that can help you achieve your goals.

If you wear contact lenses, you may be required to wear glasses instead for a week or more after the surgery. If you use eye drops, the surgeon may suggest that you switch to moisturizing eye drops throughout the day and use lubricating ointment or drops before bed.

These recommendations are more likely to be given to patients who have undergone Lasik treatment or a similar laser eye surgery.
