When to Consider Facial Reconstruction

facial reconstruction

Facial reconstruction is done to repair or correct an injury or deformity of the face. It can be performed to correct birth defects such as cleft lip or palate, or it can repair disfigurements left from burns, trauma and cancer. If you would like to correct any of these conditions, facial reconstruction surgery may be able to help you.

During your consultation, Dr. Lipschitz will discuss your concerns directly with you, helping you decide which course of action will be best for you. Because facial reconstruction surgery is unique to every patient’s situation, you can rest assured your procedure will be tailored specifically to your needs.

Cleft Lip and Palate

Cleft lip and cleft palate are congenital deformities that respectively cause a split in the upper lip and split in the upper palate. Both conditions are caused by a lack of the necessary tissues, which results in those tissues failing to properly join together. Cleft lip is the fourth most common birth defect in the US; one out of every 700 babies is born with a cleft lip every year.

Cleft lip and cleft palate can occur together or separately. Children with these deformities often have dental, speech and eating problems. A child with a cleft palate will have trouble swallowing for the cleft may cause food or drink to travel from the mouth to the nose. Children with cleft palates are also susceptible to repeated ear infections that can increase their risk of hearing loss.

Cancers and Tumors

People who develop tumors or cancers on their face often undergo facial reconstruction. Not only can the cancer or tumor distort the face, but so can the surgery done to remove it. If the tumor is large enough, it can leave a hole or depression after being removed. Many cancer patients will need skin and/or bone grafts to help restore their normal appearance.

Burns

Second and third-degree burns often result in contracture scars that make the skin abnormally tight and thus reduce the patient’s range of motion. Contracture scars can also be painful. Facial reconstruction surgery can restore that range of motion while also improving the patient’s appearance.

Trauma

Physical injury to the face is the most common reason for an adult to undergo facial reconstruction surgery. Such injuries can include burns, blunt trauma and lacerations.
