Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper blepharoplasty focuses on the function and cosmetic appeal of the upper eyelids. It can improve both wrinkles and sagging skin. In some cases, drooping eyelids may fall below the eyelash line and obstruct vision. The eyelid muscles may stretch and loosen due to age or congenital conditions, such as dermatochalasis and ptosis (drooping). Upper eyelid surgery can restore the entire field of vision by tightening the eyelid muscles and removing excess tissues.
Upper eyelid surgery starts with a small incision in the natural crease of the eyelid where the resulting scar blends in. Dr. Avron removes excess tissue, repositions fat deposits, and tightens the eyelid muscles and ligaments. The procedure typically takes an hour or less and may involve local or general anesthesia, depending on your needs and preferences.
Sagging eyebrows can accentuate or worsen drooping eyelids, so upper blepharoplasty is often combined with brow lift. Brow lift smooths the forehead and elevates the eyebrows, which may impact eyelid appearance and vision.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery focuses on puffiness and/or dark circles under the eyes and drooping eyelids pulling away from the eye. These changes happen with age as fluid and fat accumulate in the lower eyelids, creating skin discoloration and puffy under-eye bags. Lower blepharoplasty is sometimes called eye bag surgery.
The procedure may involve an incision beneath the lower eyelash line or a transconjunctival incision inside the eyelid. The inside incision can only address dark circles and puffiness and is best for younger patients without loose skin. The outer incision removes excess skin, and fatty tissues are repositioned to smooth lines and wrinkles and address dark circles and under-eye bags. Lower eyelid surgery takes longer than upper blepharoplasty, lasting an average of 90 minutes.
