Have your underarms always been a source of frustration? Does excessive sweat or hair growth make you feel in the pits? Does dressing without limitations or worry sound like a dream? If so, the Athena Plastic Surgery team of Stuart, FL is proud to offer Miradry: a solution that can turn your dream into a reality.
What Is Miradry?
Miradry is a non-surgical treatment that dramatically reduces any underarm woes. With innovative technology, we can provide this service to our patients from the comfort of our office. Patients report noticing results after a single session, so you can leave our office and carry on with your day sweat and worry-free.
How It Works
Through a small hand-held device, known as the MiraWave hand-piece, we direct electromagnetic energy at the underarm. This energy passes through the uppermost layers of the skin and is absorbed by the sweat glands as heat. Heat destroys the glands and zaps the hair follicles, making excess sweat, odor, and unwanted body hair a thing of the past.
This method is topical and non-surgical, so patients are awake and alert throughout the process. The aftercare specifications are far less restrictive and intensive than other methods of hair removal. Patients can return to their normal activities immediately following their treatment.
Safe and Convenient
Humans need to sweat glands to survive, but the reality is that only about 2% of your body’s two to four million sweat glands are located in your underarm. Once those specific sweat glands are zapped, your body doesn’t start excessively sweating elsewhere. This treatment is FDA approved and has been performed on 30,000 patients in the United States alone.
Unlike other sweat-reduction methods, the heat destroys the sweat glands and hair follicles. Most patients experience positive results following their first treatment and won’t need to book any followups.
Experience the Treatment Process
We want every patient to feel confident and comfortable with their decision to pursue this treatment. Below is a step-by-step explanation of what you can expect when you come to Athena Plastic Surgery.
Scheduling a Consultation
Before any procedure, we like to get a sense of what our patient’s desired outcomes are and how we at Athena can best help. Your consultation will determine the number of treatments you need for optimal results. Give us a call or go to our website and submit your information to make an appointment.
Shave the underarms 4-6 days prior to your session so the hair is short yet visible. This helps the practitioner better identify the targeted area. On the day of your appointment, wear a loose, sleeveless shirt to our office. This is an in-house procedure, and we pride ourselves on making our patients feel as comfortable as possible to help ease any pre-treatment nerves. Feel free to tour our beautiful office spaces, as well as our examination rooms, on our website.
Mapping the Glands
The practitioner will create a personalized map of your armpit to identify where the glands are located and mark up the designated area. A numbing cream is applied to make sure the process is as painless as possible.
The MiraWave hand-piece is lined up with the marked glands and placed directly on the skin. Once the device is turned on, it administers the electromagnetic energy to the underarm. The energy heats up and destroys the sweat and odor glands, as well as the hair follicles.
During the treatment, patients may feel a light suction sensation from the device as it’s pulling the skin and glands closer together. All the while a cooling action is dispersing to keep you comfortable. The whole process only takes about an hour to treat both underarms.
Unlike other cosmetic procedures, Miradry is non-invasive so a patient’s recovery requires little to no downtime. Other than hard physical labor that may strain the underarm, patients can immediately return to their day-to-day activities.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Because this treatment is non-invasive and non-surgical nearly everyone unhappy with their underarm conditions could be potential candidates. Some cases may be more extreme than others so talk to your health care provider to outline the best plan for you.
The Science of Sweat
Sweat is a completely natural part of human life. When our bodies overheat, our brains react by triggering over 2 million glands to pour sweat out through our pores. How do you know if you’re sweating too much? Our bodies are all relative to us, and every one is unique. Excess sweating should not be taken lightly. In fact, it may be a symptom of another serious condition. Before taking any measures to reduce your perspiration, you should consult a medical professional to ensure you are healthy and there aren’t any underlying conditions.
Comparing Sweat and Hair Removal Treatments
Traditional Shaving and Waxing
For most adults, shaving is part of the everyday routine. Imagine the time you could save if you didn’t have to tend to your underarms on a daily basis? Shaving removes the outer-portion of the hair that sticks out from the skin. However, the follicle remains intact. If the follicle is healthy, the hair will continue to grow. Depending on the speed of your hair growth cycle, your skin may only remain smooth and hair-free for a few days. While shaving is a cost-effective means of hair removal, there is quite a bit of maintenance.
Waxing involves hot wax being spread over the hair, hardening it, and then ripping it off. The entire hair is removed, including the portion beneath the skin that’s attached to the follicle. Compared to shaving, the skin will remain hair-free for longer since more of the hair was removed, though the follicle is still functioning, so it will continue to regrow hair. Those with sensitive skin may find that waxing irritates their skin. Always try a new product on a small section of the skin to ensure there isn’t a negative reaction.
Both shaving and waxing can cause new hair growth to become ingrown. Ingrown hairs are the result of hair growing into the surrounding tissue rather than up and out of the skin. These can be painful and irritating. Inflammation from the ingrown can cause a raised red bump or cluster of bumps. More severe cases can appear like a boil and even itch.
Laser Hair Removal
Laser hair removal doesn’t permanently remove hair: rather it drastically reduces hair growth. The laser only works on dark coarse hair, so this method is not an option for those that don’t meet the criteria. By using a specific wavelength of light, the laser targets hair follicles under the skin. The skin is left intact and unharmed. Laser hair removal can be done all over the body and can tackle large sections of hair because of the size of the laser. Patients may never need to shave again, but laser hair removal requires several sessions to be successful.
While this is a permanent method of hair removal, it is more invasive. A small, thin needle is slid into the hair follicle, and an electrical current is applied. This kills the follicle, making it impossible for the hair to regrow. The effectiveness of a session depends on the hair’s current stage in the growth cycle. A patient may have to return for several visits to ensure all hair in the targeted area has been effectively zapped.
A single injection of Botox has been shown to reduce sweating under the arms. Botox blocks the neurotransmission from the sympathetic nerves to the skin to the sweat glands. This reduces excessive sweating in the areas where it has been injected. The process takes about 10-15 minutes per session but only lasts between four to six months, so additional appointments must be made to maintain results.
Benefits of This Treatment
Permanently Remove Unwanted Body Hair
Unlike other cosmetic procedures that remove body hair, Miradry works on any color hair and skin-type. It is proven to be effective after just one session, so patients won’t need to schedule additional visits and accrue that extra cost. Say goodbye to razor burn and post-waxing redness!
Curb Excessive Perspiration and Odor
The Mayo Clinic describes Hyperhidrosis as, “Excessive sweating that’s not necessarily related to heat or exercise. You may sweat so much that it soaks through your clothes or drips off your hands.” Those suffering from Hyperhidrosis can feel hopeless. No deodorant or antiperspirant can entirely relieve their symptoms. Whether this has been a lifelong struggle or the result of a hormonal shift, no one wants to feel ashamed of their body’s natural reaction. This treatment can provide a one-time solution, so you never have to worry about underarm sweat again.
Your work environment can change on a dime. You shouldn’t have to compromise professionalism because of sweat. Think of the time, money, and worrying you could save without changing clothes throughout the day. Feeling empowered in your job is crucial to your success. Don’t let pesky perspiration get you down!
