Rhinoplasty, or plastic surgery to reshape the nose, is one of the most common cosmetic procedures in the United States. In addition to changing the proportions and symmetry of the nose, it can also correct certain structural breathing problems.

This plastic surgery can drastically alter the appearance of the nose, including changing the overall size, changing the size of the tip or the bridge, changing the angle, and altering the nostrils. Rhinoplasty can also correct congenital defects as well as some breathing problems. The changes made through rhinoplasty can be either subtle or dramatic. Rhinoplasty is typically safe for anyone in good health, though it’s important to wait until after the teen years have ended so that the nose has finished growing.

Rhinoplasty is an outpatient procedure and is usually under local anesthesia. This means that the nose and the area around it will be numbed and you’ll be given something to help you relax, but you’ll be awake during the procedure. Once you’re numb, the surgeon will make an incision either inside the nostrils or around the base of the nose, through which the cartilage can be reshaped. Bone and cartilage may be removed, and/or additional tissue added, depending on the new shape. When the incision is made inside the nose (closed rhinoplasty), no scars will be visible; open rhinoplasty, when the incision is made around the nostrils, may result in small scars.

During recovery, you’ll typically have to wear a splint on your nose and keep the nostrils packed to hold the new shape and maintain your airway, for about three to five days. The area around your nose will be sore, and you may experience headaches. Other side effects include bleeding, infection, and bruising. For the first few days, you’ll need to keep your head elevated and still, and you should avoid strenuous activity for several weeks. It will take a few weeks to see the new shape of your nose, after healing is complete and swelling has completely subsided.
